Standardization of the aluminum alloys

 

Standardization of composition and delivery states of the wrought aluminum alloys:

The designation of the composition, in accordance with the standard EN 573-1 as well as the internationale specifications of the Association of Aluminum, includes 6 alphanumeric characteres (followed possibly by the letter A or X).

A set of four figures follows to indicate the alloy as follows:

The first figure indicating the group or the serie which the aluminum or the alloy appears:
1 : non-alloyed aluminum.
2 : aluminum-copper alloy.
3 :

aluminum-manganese alloy.

4 : silicon-aluminum alloy.
5 : aluminum-magnesium alloy.
6 : aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy.
7 : aluminum-zinc alloy.
8 :

other aluminum alloys.

The second figure is reserved for the modifications of the alloy composition. The figure 0 corresponds to the original alloy. The figures from 1 to 9 correspond to the successive modifications.

The last two figures have no particular meaning and are only used to identify the alloy, except for the non alloyed aluminums (serie 1000) for which these two figures indicate the two decimals of the minimum content in aluminum (ex : EN AW 1098 : 99,98 % aluminum).
The designation of the delivery state, in accordance with the standard Afnor NF A 02-006, plans four basic tempers:
F: crude state of manufacturing.
O: soft temper.
H: strain hardened temper (H1x), partially annealed (H2x) or stabilized temper (H3x).
T: hardened state by heat treatment.

At the international level, it exists two standards:

- The one of the Association of the Aluminum that is the same that the French standard NF A 02-104.

- ISO/R 209 : that gives the composition in chemical symbol. For the non-alloyed aluminums, it includes the symbol Al followed by the minimal content in % (ex : Al1080 : 99.80 % aluminum mini). For the alloys, the symbol Al is followed by the components of the alloy, then by the average content round off in % of the components (Ex : 2017a, AlCu4MgSi).
